World music collection 29: Yuming Special

The jacket of her first album published at 1973.

Yuming is a representative of japanese poular music creators. It is unfortunate that world people have not know her music until recent days, because her works are undoubtedly a world treasury. Recently her works have been opened upon YouTube etc and everyone can contact with her opera, voice, and performance.

ひさしぶりで温度の低い小雨の日、季節は違いますが「ベルベット・イースター」の一節を頭に散乱させながらスーパーマーケットへ。昨週のようなサウナはもう勘弁してほしい。ベルベット・イースターはもう５０年以上前のユーミンの曲です。

ユーミンを初めて知ったのは、野沢那智・白石冬美の Pac in Music というラジオ番組でした。ここで流れていた「ルージュの伝言」にゆすぶられました。その後東京に出てきてからはハイファイセットのレコードを買ってよく聴いていました。

ユーミンはもともと作曲・作詞家志望で、赤坂のアオイスタジオでデモテープを制作しているときに、当時赤い鳥の分裂で再出発をめざしていた山本俊彦・潤子（後に夫妻）氏と出会い、ユーミンが制作した曲をハイファイセットというユニットで歌うことになりました。

私はユーミンを崇拝していますが、一度もライブに出かけたことはありません。デビューしたころは、その声が受け入れられなかったからだと思います。巷には日本凄いという似非物語があふれていますが、彼女の音楽はまさしく人類の至宝でしょう。日本語という壁がありましたし海外公演もやってなかったので、世界に受け入れられるのに半世紀もかかりましたが、ウェブで聴けるようになった現在は彼女の音楽もようやくユニバーサルになりつつあるようです。

She is now seventies but some video tapes when she was in teenager remain, though the pictures are fuzzy.
