スカボロー・フェア

弥勒さん（プラザでリンク）がサイモンとガーファンクルの「スカボロー・フェア」をネタにしていたので、私も少し調べてみました。これはもともと英国の民謡で、イギリスの民謡歌手マーチン・カーシーのアレンジした「スカボロー・フェア」を、サイモンとガーファンクルが自分たちのヒット曲にしたという由来らしいです。

縫い目のない服をつくれとか、海と浜辺の間の１エーカーの土地で耕作しろとか、無理難題が並べられる不可解な歌詞なのですが、ウィキペディアを見るとこの歌にはデュエット版があって、その最後には　「できないと言うのなら、私はこう答える、ああ、せめてやってみると知らせてくれ、でなければあなたは決して恋人ではない」　というオチがあるみたいです。なんとなく聴いていたのですが、みろくはんのお蔭で勉強してしまいました。　 

あとパセリ・セージ・ローズマリー＆タイムという呪文のような歌詞ですが、サイモンとガーファンクルは多分最後のタイムが意味する　「タイムは度胸の象徴であり、歌が書かれた時代、騎士達は戦いに赴く際に楯にタイムの像を付けた」　にヒントを得て、出征のため恋人に会えない兵士が奇跡を願う歌（もう忘れられた理由のために、将軍は兵士に戦えと命じる　などという歌詞が挿入されています）に改変したのではないでしょうか。

それにしても彼らが歌うパセリ・セージ・ローズマリー＆タイムというフレーズは美しいですね。メッセージソングであっても、あくまでメッセージはバックグラウンドに埋め込んで、メロディやハーモニーの美しさを重視するところがサイモンとガーファンクルの真骨頂です。
